Rapid Humus Production

Idea

The idea to produce the compost is not new. We would need a lot of the best quality earth to fertilize the fields to grow the plants, thus to improve the quality of food. The far the plants are getting the best conditions to grow, they are going to be strong, happy, and to develop autoimmune system on their own, in order to withstand easy any parasitic attack.

Especially if we would need to organize the new surface of fertile field, we are going to need a lot of compost, the best fertile earth. Their are numerous methods how to produce compost, but in general their are only two ways:

1- bacteria based composting
2- rain-worms based composting

Bacteria based composting could also be very efficient, under not so easy manageable conditions. This kind of composting is already wide spread in producing the bio-gas from bio-mass to drive the electric power-plants.

Worms based composting could be even better, concerning the conditions which are easier to match, fast transformation of bio-mass into high quality humus, as well as the matter of fact that near the humus the rain worms are going to reproduce and to build the base for food, since they consists of over 80% of proteins, regardless if it is about the food for chickens, fish or even though human.

Double compost box with perforated
intermediate wall

To get high efficiently compost application, we should build the double wooden box, similar to this one shown on the image above. The box should be made of some wooden planking, combined with some stainless mosquito net, to allow the air-conditioning, avoiding simultaneously the worms to escape. Only intermediate wall should be perforated with some bigger holes, in order to allow the worms to migrate from one box to another, after one cycle of filling the half of the box is finished.

The rain worms are going to be fed with bio-mass regularly unless the half of the box is filled completely. Then, simply starting to spread a bio-mass into another box half, the rain worms are going to migrate through the perforated wall alone, on their own. Next day, you could take the humus out of the box. The bio-mass should be prepared in order to optimize the process to be faster, cutting it in small peaces or even though grinding the bio-mass with some appropriate milling device. The bio-mass could be everything which consists of cellulose, even old paper could be implemented.

To optimize the process, the layer of bio-mass should not be thicker then one inch. Depends on how many worms are involved in process of producing humus, the frequency of feeding is going to be determined. For the cube box of the side size less then one meter, thus the base surface less then one square meter, approximately two weeks or even less would be needed to fill it completely.

Automating humus production

The humus production process could be more or less automated, so we could get a lot of humus in relatively short time, depends on how much bio-mass is available. The boxes could be multiplied, fixed using some kind of spacers of the ground, to easier get the humus out, just opening the bottom of the box.

Even though the feeding process could be automated, using some simple programmable timer application combined with some simple robotics.

Production of one cube meter of humus would need approximately ten days, thus implementing ten boxes, we would get one cube meter of humus each day. For this scenario, we would need the ground surface of 10 m x 2 m.

The humus produced in this way could be used to plant the garden, but also to plant the new forest at devastating fields. In this case we should plant the groups of different trees, not far away distanced from each another, giving them enough food and water to could grow and spread alone, meeting each other after the time.

In general, first smaller, then bigger plants should be planted.
